Three must-visit places in Spain for culture lovers
For some holidaymakers, going abroad is a chance to discover new cultures and learn about their history. Whilst there’s nothing wrong with a good beach holiday, getting out and about and exploring can really help you feel like you’re getting an authentic experience.
Spain is a renowned tourist destination for its sunny weather, picturesque beaches and tasty food. But there is so much more to this diverse country than meets the eye. A cultural holiday in Spain is the perfect way to experience the country’s rich history and traditions. From the Moorish architecture of Granada to the Iglesia de Santa María in Toledo, there are countless sites to explore:
Granada
Granada is a city in southern Spain that is renowned for its fascinating architecture and history. The city is home to the world-famous Alhambra, a palace and fortress complex that was built by the Moorish rulers of Granada in the 13th century. Constructed around a central courtyard, this beautiful palace was once home to the court of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella (parents of Henry VIII’s first wife, Catherine of Aragon).
Granada is also home to the Generalife, a beautiful garden that was built in the 13th century and was once used as a summer retreat by the Moorish rulers. With its stunning gardens and architecture, the Generalife is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Granada.
Seville (Sevilla, in Spanish)
Seville is well-known for its Flamenco music and dance, which is characterised by its fast-paced, enthusiastic rhythms and passionate lyrics. It is typically performed by a small group of musicians, who accompany the dancers with guitars, percussion, and vocals. The dancers often wear traditional Spanish clothing, such as brightly colored dresses or skirts, making it a real spectacle for an evening out.
Seville is also home to the Alcázar, a beautiful palace that was built by the Moorish rulers of Spain in the 14th century. Visitors can easily spend an afternoon exploring the beautiful gardens, courtyards, and rooms of the palace. It’s also a popular filming location, and it has been featured in many movies and TV shows, including Game of Thrones.
However, in Seville there is much more to visit than the Alcázar. It is a majestic city not to be missed!
Toledo
Toledo was once the capital of Spain during the Middle Ages and is full of beautiful churches and cathedrals from that period, making it a perfect choice for those who simply want to wander and admire. The historic quarter is actually a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so you can be sure that you’ll be able to get your fill of fascinating buildings and winding streets.
Toledo is often described as “the city of three cultures“, so make sure that you leave time to discover the Jewish quarter and the convent quarter too.

There’s so much to see and do in Spain, so take your time to savour and enjoy everything that this gorgeous country has to offer. Many of these landmarks are popular tourist attractions, so if you prefer a quieter experience, then travel outside the peak months so that you can explore in peace.
