What should you look for in a language tutor?
When it comes to learning a language, you want to make sure that you’re getting the best quality education available to you. Often, this means employing the help of a foreign language tutor. To ensure you’re choosing someone who will support and guide you through your lessons successfully, here are three things you should look for when making that initial booking.
Relevant qualifications and experience
You can learn your chosen language from anyone who has a good grasp of it, whether they’re native speakers, or second language learners themselves. However, for the best possible chance at becoming fluent in a language, you’re going to want to look for a tutor with plenty of relevant qualifications and experience.
Usually, this will mean that they’ve studied the language they’re giving lessons in, and have been tutoring for a significant amount of time. However, any education qualification or training is a sign that your tutor is adept at providing quality language lessons.
An engaging teaching style
It’s important to get on well with the tutor you select. After all, you want to feel enthusiastic about their methods, and engaged in the lessons that they teach.
Usually, you’ll need to book a taster session to check that your tutor’s style of working also works for you. However, you can often tell how engaging they are by simply reading an excerpt of their profile or website, or asking about their approach prior to booking a session.
Excellent reviews
You don’t want to commit yourself to language lessons unless you’re totally sure that they’re going to work for you. For this reason, it’s always best to check out your tutor’s reviews prior to booking a class. This is a great way to get a sense for how their lessons have been conducted in the past, and whether or not their previous students were satisfied.
Ultimately, what works for someone else may not work for you – and just because someone didn’t see progress with a specific tutor, doesn’t mean that you won’t. For this reason, when choosing a language tutor, it’s important to prioritise your own wants and needs above all else, and choose a tutor who feels most compatible with you.
