Why German is an important language to learn

Have you ever considered studying the German language? Here are some reasons why studying German is a good idea!

1- German and English have many things in common.

The West-Germanic language is the mother language of many modern and widely spoken languages, such as English and Dutch. If you are a native English speaker, German will be easy to learn as both languages have a lot of vocabulary in common. Some examples are ‘Good morning’ and ‘Guten Morgen’, ‘football’ and ‘Fussball’ or ‘book’ and ‘Buch’.

If your native language does not have West-Germanic roots, do not worry! There are more reasons why German is one of the most important languages to study.

2- German is very useful if you are traveling in Europe.

As mentioned earlier, many West-European languages have German roots, which means that the German language is very popular in Europe.

In fact, German is the second most spoken language in Europe (after English) and the most spoken ‘native’ language in Europe. Around 92 million people are native German speakers and approximately 220 million people can speak German worldwide. Moreover, German is also extremely popular worldwide: it is in the top 3 most learned languages.

German is the official native language in Germany, Austria and Liechtenstein. German is also widely spoken in Switzerland. Countries surrounding Germany, such as The Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Italy, Luxembourg and Hungary, use German as a second/third language.

For travelers who are looking for their next winter-sports destination, here are some good news! Most winter-sports resorts have German-speaking employees and trainers.

3- Studying in Germany is FREE!

Most universities in Germany are free. What is better is the excellent reputation German universities have. Germany is one of the most popular countries to go for studying abroad. Approximately 250.000 students go to Germany to study at their universities every year.

If you are interested in studying science at one of the best universities in the world, Germany is the place to go. Some of the famous scientists are from Germany.

4- Good career opportunities

We all know that speaking multiple languages is extremely important for a successful career. Being able to speak German might give you good career opportunities in different fields.

Big companies like Volkswagen, Mercedes Benz and Adidas are German. If you are interested in working for one of the biggest and widely recognised brands in the world, then studying German should be on your to-do list

Do you prefer being your own boss and starting your own company? Germany is a great place for entrepreneurs and innovators. So, if you are looking to start a successful career, start by learning German.

The month of July was sprinkled with dozens of ‘first-times’ for me.

This was about to be the first time travelling entirely on my own to a country I have never been to before, speaking a language that I was not completely fluent in. Needless to say, I was more than nervous.
